Say this?
说这些?
And look stupid.
你会像个傻瓜
In today’s video,
今天的视频里
phrases and words that make you look like an idiot.
我们来聊聊那些让你显得很蠢的短语和词汇
So let’s start things off with the word “plethora”.
就让我们从“plethora”这个词开始吧
Do you have a plethora of piñatas?
你有很多节日饰品吗?
Do you know what plethora means?
你知道plethora是什么意思?
And if you don’t, don’t worry.
如果你不知道 不要担心
Neither did Jefe.
Jefe也不知道
In the classic movie The Three Amigos,
经典电影《三个朋友》里
we’ve got El Guapo making fun of Jefe,
EL Guapo取笑Jefe
because Jefe did not have an understanding
因为Jefe不理解
of that very complex and rarely used word.
这个非常复杂 又不常用的单词
And here’s the point.
重点来啦
If you’re using an overly complex word
如果你使用一个过于复杂的词
to try to make yourself look smarter, more superior to others,
试图让自己显得比别人更聪明更优秀
this is going to backfire on you.
这往往会适得其反
So this was proven in the amply named 2005 study,
此结论被2005年的一项有着巨长名字的研究所证明
Consequences of Erudite Vernacular Utilized Irrespective of Necessity:
《论不切实际乱用方言的后果:
Problems with Using Long Words Needlessly.
使用不必要的长单词的问题研究》
So what the researchers at Princeton discovered
普林斯顿的研究者们发现
is when someone purposely used words that were overly complex,
当某人本可以选择更简洁的表达
when they could have chosen something that was simpler,
却故意使用了过度复杂的词汇时
people’s opinion of them actually dropped.
人们对他们的评价实际上会下降
So, the point here,
所以 此处的重点是
don’t think that bringing in words that nobody has heard of,
不要认为使用不常用的词
that nobody knows is going to make you look smarter.
没人知道的词会让你显得更聪明
Most likely, it’s gonna backfire.
很有可能适得其反
Next up, we’ve got the word “actually”.
接下来 我们说说“actually(实际上)”这个单词
So the problem here is
此处的问题是
when you use this at the beginning of a sentence,
当你把它用在一句话的开头
when you’re responding to somebody,
来回答别人的问题时
it makes it sounds like you’re criticizing them.
听上去像是你在批评他们
You’re being defensive,
你在自我防御
that you’re coming up with an excuse.
你正在找借口
So, imagine if one of your coworkers asks you,
想象一下 如果你的一个同事问你说
“Hey, are you ready to get started working on that project?”
“嘿 你准备开始做这个项目了吗?”
Now, what’s the feeling being conveyed here
当你说 “其实 还没呢”
when you say, “Actually, I’m not.”?
你表达的是什么感受呢?
In my opinion, this seems a bit defensive.
我觉得 这似乎有点戒备心太强了
And why wouldn’t you just simply say,
为什么不直接简单点儿说
“No, I’m not ready”?
“没 我还没准备好”呢?
What was the point of saying “actually”?
说“actually”的意义何在呢?
It just made you look defensive.
它只会让你看上去防备心太强
It kind of turns off the other person.
还会让别人对你失去兴趣
It’s not necessary.
没必要这么说
Next up on the list, the word “honestly”
来看我们列表的下一个词“honestly(老实说)”
So, I’ve been guilty of this.
其实我自己一直在说这个词
Honestly, let me tell you what happened.
真的 就让我告诉你发生了什么吧
So, when you say this, think about it.
这么说的时候 请你想一想
Are you meaning that all the times before this,
你的意思是此前
you were lying to the person?
你都在对这个人说谎吗?
If you have to state
如果你非得申明
that you are being honest this one time,
这一次要坦诚相待
what does that say about all the other times
那这怎么解释你其他时间
that you’ve spoken and you’ve said something?
曾经说过的话呢?
Again, we’re oftentimes putting these words in there
同样 我们通常不思考暗含的意思
without even thinking about what they’re implying.
就用上了那些词
Next up, we’ve got “no offense”.
下一个 我们来看看“no offense(无意冒犯)”
So when you hear no offense,
当你听到无意冒犯的时候
what do you think is gonna come next?
你觉得接下来会发生什么呢?
That person is going to offend you.
那人就要冒犯你了
They’re gonna say something that is going to
他们就要说一些
disagree something you don’t wanna hear,
你不想听的反对意见
something that’s gonna be critical.
一些批评的言论了
And when you hear that’s coming, what do you do?
当你听到这些 你会做什么呢?
You tighten up.
你会紧张起来
You set up your defenses.
你会产生戒备心
You are not…
你不是……
You know this person is gonna say something
你就知道这个人要说一些
that you probably don’t wanna hear.
你很可能不想听的话了
Another thing with saying no offense
说无意冒犯的另外一个问题是
is you oftentimes say this in front of other people.
你经常在别人面前说这个词
And then you go into that criticism.
然后就开始批评
Publicly criticizing somebody and preempting it with no offense,
公然批评某人 并以无意冒犯先堵住对方的口
really, this is a failure of leadership.
真的 这是领导的失败
I think that you should take the person back into a private area
我觉得你应该把那人带到私密空间
and then make it about you.
把它当成你自己的个人问题来解决
I have concerns.
我很担心
Can we talk about this?
我们可以谈谈这个问题吗?
Are you open to feedback?
我可以给你反馈吗?
That’s a lot better and it’s a lot more direct
这比用无意冒犯这个词开始
than starting it off with no offense.
要好得多 直接得多
Just saying.
就是说说而已
Thank you for clarifying that you just said, what you just said,
谢谢你澄清你刚才说的话
and that you let me know that you just said it.
并让我知道你刚说了这话
What’s the point of saying “just saying”?
你说“说说而已”的重点在哪里呢?
Okay, we know this.
好吧 我们懂的
Maybe there’s a little bit of emotion that you’re trying to get across.
也许你想让对方明白你的一点小情绪
Pointing out that, you know, hey,
指出来说 嘿 你知道
I’m kind of removed from this.
我已经说完了 不再纠结这个了
Don’t blame me.
不要怪我
The point is what you’re saying makes no sense.
问题是 你说的讲不通
Just saying.
不过说说而已
Next up, we’ve got the word “like”.
下面 我们说说“like(好像)”这个词
A very common crutch word that many of us fall to.
一个我们经常依赖的拐杖词
I know I have.
我反正用过
The problem here, you sound like a valley girl.
此处的问题是 你听上去像个富家大小姐
Yeah, I was late for work,
是啊 我上班迟到了
like it was just…
就好像……
Everything was falling out of place.
一切都乱七八糟
I missed the bus, like what could I do?
我错过了巴士 我还能怎样呢?
I got on the phone and I like tried to call somebody.
我拿起电话 想给某人打个电话
How many times are you gonna say that?
这个词你要说多少次呢?
And you’re already late for work.
而且你已经上班迟到了
And now, we’re hearing the way that you speak.
现在 都听到你们说话的方式了吧
Maybe I’m your boss’s boss, talking to you.
或许我就是你老板的老板 在跟你谈话
And my impression is not gonna be good.
我对你的印象不会好的
This is not a sign of high intelligence.
这不是高智商的标志
You may be the smartest person in the room,
你也许是房间里最聪明的人
but if you use the crutch word “like” all the time,
但如果你总是用“好像”这样的拐杖词的话
you are not gonna come off that way.
你是不会摆脱这个样子的
Similar to the crutch word like,
和拐杖词like类似的
we’ve got the crutch word “uhhh”.
还有“额”这个词
And this isn’t even a word.
这甚至都不算个词
This is just something that we say
这只是我们思考接下来该说什么时
when we’re thinking about what to say next.
所说的东西
The problem here is that it takes our intelligence
这里的问题在于 这让我们的智力
or our perceived intelligence level
或说别人眼中我们的智力水平
and it drops it significantly.
显著的下降
People that default,
那些习以为常
that fall into these crutch words again and again,
反复使用这些词的人
are rated as less intelligent,
会被认为不够聪明
as less of a leader.
不配做领导
So you gotta be careful here.
所以这里你得小心了
You do wanna know when this is happening.
它的出现时 你一定要觉察到
And this is the scariest part is that many of us,
最可怕的一点就是 我们中很多人
and I know I fall into this,
我知道我反正是这样
we don’t even notice when we’re doing it.
就是我们甚至意识不到自己在说这个词
The best thing I can advise you here is slow down.
我能给你的最好的建议就是说慢点
It’s okay to speak a little bit slower.
说慢一点没关系
When you’re speaking with someone one on one
当你单独跟某人说话
or you’re giving a presentation,
或者演讲时
don’t be afraid to slow it down
不要怕说得慢
and know what you want to say.
并且心里要清楚你想说什么
Now let’s talk about the word “irregardless”.
现在我们说说“irregardless”这个词
It’s not a word.
这不是个词
Yes, I know it’s in the dictionary somewhere,
是的 我知道字典上有这个词
but it’s not a proper word.
但这不是个正确的词
What you probably mean to say is regardless,
你的意思大概是regardless(不管)
and that’s what you wanna say.
这才是你想说的
Don’t say irregardless.
不要说irregardless
When you say regardless, it’s, you know,
当你说regardless的时候 你知道
I really don’t care about the consequences
意思是我真的不在乎后果
and that’s what you mean.
这才是你想表达的意思
So, irregardless, don’t say it.
所以 不要说irregardless
Now let’s talk about the words “literally”, “actually” and “basically”.
现在 我们来谈谈“真地” “实际上”和“基本上”
These are intensifiers.
这些都是加强语气的词
We use these words to add emphasis to what we’re saying.
我们使用这些词来强调我们所说的话
The problem is that they’re easily overused.
问题是 它们很容易被过度使用
So, if you use literally all the time,
所以 如果你一直使用literally(真的/实际上)
that’s the word you default to.
你已经对这个词习以为常了
You need to actually be doing it,
你应该实际上正在做那件事
and it needs to have been done.
而且需要做完
So if you say, “Okay, I’m literally falling asleep here.”,
所以如果你说 “好的 我真的要在这里睡了”
that meant that you have fallen asleep.
那就是说你已经睡着了
And if you’ve fallen asleep, how are you talking?
如果已经睡着了 你怎么会说话呢?
And that’s not really truly the case.
但事实上并非如此
So, you’re lying?
所以 你是在撒谎吗?
You see, you wanna make sure you’re using this word correctly.
你瞧 你本想确保正确使用这个词的
Similar to literally, actually is overused all the time.
和literally一样 actually(实际上)也一直被过度使用
What you’re saying here is that this is 100% true.
你在此想表达的是 这是100%真实的
So, when you say, “Actually, it was the most amazing night ever.”,
当你说 “实际上 这是有史以来最美妙的夜晚”
are you doing that, you just wanted to add emphasis
你这么说 只是想强调一下(它很美)
or really was it the most amazing night ever?
还是这真的是有史以来最美妙的夜晚呢?
Because you actually… when you add that there,
因为你其实…… 当你把它用在那里
you are saying this was better than any other night.
你是在说这比任何一个夜晚都美妙
And if that’s not the case, then technically you’re lying.
如果事实并非如此 那么严格来讲 你在撒谎
And now let’s talk about basically.
现在我们谈谈basically(基本上)
A lot of people default.
很多人习惯用这个词
They say this at the beginning of their sentences.
他们把它用在句首
If you’re saying this
如果你说了这个词
and you’re explaining things in basic terms,
你在用基本术语解释事情
why did you need to state that
那你为什么需要申明
you were gonna explain them in basic terms?
你要用基本术语解释它们呢?
And if you’re using it just because it’s a crutch,
如果你用它只是因为它可以帮助填补空白
the issue here is it makes you look really nervous.
那这里的问题就是 它让你看起来很紧张
It makes you look unsure of yourself.
它让你看起来不自信
Now, this next one.
来看下一个
I personally make this mistake all the time.
我个人一直在犯这样的错误
And that is the use of “I personally”.
就是使用“我个人”
Why do I need to state that I’m personally saying something
为什么我需要声明我个人正在说的
which you can clearly tell I am stating it?
你能清楚分辨是我在说的事呢?
Again, it’s one of those crutch words we default to,
这还是我们习以为常的拐杖词之一
we fall to when we’re looking for words to fill space.
我们寻找词汇填补空白时使用的
And if you’re looking to get better,
如果你想改进
you’re looking to improve,
你想要提升
my best advice to you is to record yourself.
我最好的建议就是把自己录下来
Slow down, think,
速度慢一点 想一想
find small areas that you can improve,
找到可以改进的细微之处
and then practice.
然后进行练习
And really, that’s what it is.
真的 就是这样
I know I’ve become a better speaker creating these videos.
我知道 制作这些视频让我自己成了一个更好的演讲者
And you can start to master the language.
你也可以精通这门语言
You can start to put this information into practice
你可以把我刚说的这一点付诸实践
by simply taking action.
开始行动即可
So have you ever used the phrase “could care less”?
你曾使用过“could care less”这个短语吗?
What you meant to say is “couldn’t care less”.
其实你是想说“couldn’t care less(毫不关心)”
Because if you could care less, guess what?
因为如果你could care less 猜猜会怎样?
You could actually care less.
你可能实际上就是不是很关心
So, the amount you care
所以你关心的程度
is a bit higher than couldn’t care less.
比couldn’t care less(毫不关心)要高一点
Because if you couldn’t care less,
因为如果你毫不在乎
that means that you have hit rock bottom.
意味着你已经到底限了
The point of saying this is that you don’t care,
这么说重点是要表达你不在乎
that you’re not worried about this.
你不担心这个
Just make sure that you’re saying the right thing.
确保你的表达正确就好
With all due respect.
恕我直言
So when you say this, the funny part about this
当你说这句话时 有趣的一点是
is that you really don’t respect that person.
你真的不尊重那个人
You’re frustrated with them.
你对他们感到沮丧
You wanna just speak your mind,
你只想说出你的想法
but you don’t wanna be held accountable for it.
但是你不想对此负责
Here’s the deal, is that by saying with all due respect
事情是这样的 你说恕我直言
does not absolve you from the consequences of your words.
并不能消除你说话的后果
And when you say this, we all know what it means,
你这么说的时候 我们都知道它的意思
that this person you just don’t see eye to eye with.
你和这个人意见根本不一致
You’re frustrated, and you don’t respect them.
你感到沮丧 而且你并不尊重他们
So, how to deal with this?
那么 如何处理这个问题呢?
Don’t start it with that.
不要以这个短语开头
That’s gonna make the other person defensive.
这会让对方产生戒备心
Again, pull them into a private conversation.
同样 还是把他们带到私密空间单独聊
Since studies have shown
因为研究表明
whenever people are behind closed doors,
无论何时人们身处私密空间时
they’re not having to act for a crowd.
他们都不必在大众面前表演
They’re not having to look good in front of others.
他们不必在别人面前要面子
They’re more open to seeing another person’s point of view.
他们更能敞开心扉接受别人的观点
And don’t try to press it on them.
而且不要试图强迫他们接受
You want people to trip over your point of view, your truth.
你想让人们自然接受你的观点 你的真理
And you wanna help them see it
你要帮助他们看到
and help them realize the point.
帮助他们明白这一点
You’re not gonna be able to force someone to see something,
你不能强迫一个人明白某事
but you can help them realize the truth.
但是你能帮助他们了解那个真理
Let’s nip this in the butt.
让我们nip this in the butt吧
That’s not what you meant to say.
这不是你想说的
You wanna say nip this in the bud.
你其实想说nip this in the bud(防患于未然)
Nip this in the bud refers to
防患于未然是指
cutting something off before it has the chance to grow.
在某物有机会长大前就剪掉
It refers to plants.
它指的是植物
And the idea here is a little bit of work early on
这里的意思是提早做点工作
can save you a lot of hassle later.
能为你减轻很多后续的麻烦
